Head of Department Prof Robert Yacamini The department is one of the largest in this college with 290 undergraduate students, 14 academic staff and 8 support staff. It is housed on two sites, in the Electrical Engineering Building on the main campus and at the National Microelectronics Research Centre (NMRC) close to the centre of Cork City. The department is currently in a phase of expansion, having taken on four new members of academic staff in the last year. An extensive refurbishment of the laboratories and teaching areas is currently in progress, and is being supported by the government under a skills shortage initiative and by industries who are keen to recruit UCC engineering graduates. The undergraduate student population is the strongest in Ireland, achieving the highest score at school Leaving Certificate examinations. The undergraduate courses and the research activities of the department cover the full range of electrical engineeirng with an additional mechanical input. Active areas include telecommunications and power electronics where there are in-house engineering companies in the department); power systems; control; optoelectronics and lasers; electromechanical systems, ultrasonice/NDT and production engineering. During the expansion period, we are keen to recruit good quality graduates as PhD students into many of the above areas. Funds are available. Please contact the department via the address shown.
